Progress, Perspective, and a Deeper Understanding of CF

This session will provide a unique overview of the progress of cystic fibrosis and the CF Foundation from various perspectives. Join energetic and passionate emcee, Jamie Roney, CF mom, as she guides our discussion through the perspective of a CF Foundation staff member; Dr. Miriam Frankenthal Figueira, a CF scientist working to cure her own disease; and Joseph Pilewski, MD, co-director of the adult CF Care Center at UPMC. Bring your questions as we end the session with an engaging Q&A with our panel of speakers to bring you a deeper understanding of real life with CF.
Dr. Miriam Frankenthal Figueira
Miriam is a biomedical scientist researcher originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Miriam Figueira was diagnosed with CF at 13 years old and has 2 rare mutations. She is currently 33 years old and a post-doc research associate at the University of North Carolina researching how CFTR modulators affect mucus properties in CF. Miriam has a Ph.D. and master’s degree in physiology and received her undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences. She is also currently a council member of the tomorrow's leaders of the CF Foundation Central/Eastern Carolinas Chapter.

Joseph Pilewski, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Cell Biology, University of Pittsburgh
Co-Director, Cystic Fibrosis Program, Univ of Pittsburgh Medical Center/UPMC; Co-executive Director, CF Lung Transplant Initiative
Dr. Joe Pilewski is an adult pulmonary and critical care physician with clinical focus on the care of adults with Cystic Fibrosis and patients before and after lung transplantation. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs in the Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Division at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. His research career has focused on the development of new treatments for CF and improving the opportunities and outcomes for individuals who have advanced lung disease.

Jamie is the driving force behind Driving Miss Desi- a Lifestyle and CF awareness brand. She resides in Huntsville, AL with her husband, Ross, children Desi and Riggs and Great Dane, Coley. An active volunteer with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation since 2015, she is on the Alabama Board of Directors, National Leadership Council and an active presence on the Driving Miss Desi Instagram account.
